Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)

Mandatory annual withdrawals from qualified annuities (those funded with pre-tax dollars from IRAs or 401(k) plans) once the owner reaches the applicable age set by the IRS. RMDs do not apply to non-qualified annuities. Failing to take the required distribution results in a significant tax penalty.

Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) are mandatory withdrawals from qualified retirement accounts, including qualified annuities, starting at a specific age. The IRS requires these distributions to ensure tax-deferred savings eventually get taxed.

Current RMD rules (as of 2024):

  • Age 73 for those born 1951-1959
  • Age 75 for those born 1960 or later
  • Must take first RMD by April 1 of year after reaching required age
  • Subsequent RMDs due by December 31 each year
How RMDs are calculated: 1. Determine account balance as of December 31 of prior year 2. Find your distribution period from IRS Uniform Lifetime Table 3. Divide account balance by distribution period 4. That's your required minimum distribution

Example RMD calculation:

  • Account balance: $200,000
  • Age: 73
  • Distribution period: 26.5 (from IRS table)
  • RMD: $200,000 ÷ 26.5 = $7,547

Annuity-specific RMD considerations:

  • Qualified annuities in accumulation: Included in IRA RMD calculation
  • Annuitized contracts: May satisfy RMD if payments meet or exceed requirement
  • Income rider payments: May count toward RMD if structured properly
  • Multiple accounts: Can aggregate IRAs for RMD purposes

Penalty for missing RMDs:

  • 25% excise tax on amount not distributed (reduced from 50% in 2023)
  • Can be reduced to 10% if corrected in timely manner
  • File Form 5329 with explanation if claiming penalty reduction
For Ocala retirees with qualified annuities, coordinating RMDs across all retirement accounts ensures compliance while minimizing unnecessary taxes.
